The dispute of the Jews and the Christians before the Messenger ﷺ
Translation
✧ [The disputation of the Jews and the Christians before the Messenger ﷺ] Ibn Isḥāq said: When the Christians of Najrān came to the Messenger of God ﷺ, the rabbis of the Jews came to them, and they disputed before the Messenger of God ﷺ. Rāfiʿ b. Ḥuraymilah said: “You are not upon anything,” and he disbelieved in Jesus and the Gospel. A man from the people of Najrān among the Christians said to the Jews: “You are not upon anything,” and he rejected the prophethood of Moses and disbelieved in the Torah. So God Most High revealed concerning that, from their saying: “The Jews said, ‘The Christians are not upon anything,’ and the Christians said, ‘The Jews are not upon anything,’ while they recite the Scripture. Thus said those who do not know, the like of their saying. God will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection concerning that wherein they used to differ” (Qurʾān 2:113). That is, each recites in his Scripture the confirmation of what he disbelieves in—that is, the Jews disbelieve in Jesus, while they have the Torah, in which is what God took upon them on the tongue of Moses ﷺ to believe in Jesus ﷺ ; and in the Gospel is what Jesus ﷺ brought of the confirmation of Moses ﷺ and what he brought of the Torah from God. And each disbelieves in what is in the possession of his companion.
