What was revealed concerning the statement of b. Ḥuraymila and Wahb
[ مَا نَزَلَ فِي قَوْلِ ابْنِ حُرَيْمِلَةَ وَوَهْبٍ ] وَقَالَ رَافِعُ بْنُ حُرَيْمِلَةَ، وَوَهْبُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ: يَا مُحَمَّدُ، ائْتِنَا بِكِتَابٍ تُنَزِّلُهُ عَلَيْنَا مِنْ السَّمَاءِ نَقْرَؤُهُ، وَفَجِّرْ لَنَا أَنَهَارًا نَتَّبِعْكَ وَنُصَدِّقْكَ. فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى فِي ذَلِكَ مِنْ قَوْلِهِمَا: أَمْ تُرِيدُونَ أَنْ تَسْأَلُوا رَسُولَكُمْ كَمَا سُئِلَ مُوسَى مِنْ قَبْلُ وَمَنْ يَتَبَدَّلِ الْكُفْرَ بِالْإِيمَانِ فَقَدْ ضَلَّ سَوَاءَ السَّبِيلِ [ تَفْسِيرُ ابْنِ هِشَامٍ لِبَعْضِ الْغَرِيبِ ] قَالَ ابْنُ هِشَامٍ: سَوَاءُ السَّبِيلِ: وَسَطُ السَّبِيلِ. قَالَ حَسَّانُ بْنُ ثَابِتٍ:: يَا وَيْحَ أَنْصَارِ النَّبِيِّ وَرَهْطِهِ بَعْدَ الْمُغَيَّبِ فِي سَوَاءِ الْمُلْحَدِ وَهَذَا الْبَيْتُ فِي قَصِيدَةٍ لَهُ سَأَذْكُرُهَا فِي مَوْضِعِهَا إنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى:
Translation
✧ [What was revealed concerning the saying of Ibn Hurayzila and Wahb] And Rāfiʿ b. Hurayzila and Wahb b. Zayd said to the Messenger of God ﷺ: O Muḥammad, bring us a book that you send down upon us from heaven that we may read, and cause rivers to gush forth for us, that we may follow you and believe you. So God, exalted be He, revealed concerning that, regarding their saying: Or do you desire to ask your Messenger as Moses was asked before? And whoever exchanges faith for disbelief has surely strayed from the right path. [Ibn Hishām's commentary on some of the uncommon words] Ibn Hishām said: sawāʾ al-sabīl: the middle of the path. Ḥassān b. Thābit said: O woe to the helpers of the Prophet and his kin after he is hidden in the middle of the grave. This verse is in an ode of his which I will mention in its proper place, if God, exalted be He, wills.
