Translation

✧ Those of the rabbis of the Jews who embraced Islam hypocritically: Ibn Isḥāq said: Among those who sought protection by [professing] Islam, entered it along with the Muslims, and displayed it while being a hypocrite, from the rabbis of the Jews, were [from the Banū Qaynuqāʿ hypocrites in Madinah]: from the Banū Qaynuqāʿ: Saʿd b. Ḥunayf, Zayd b. al-Luṣayt, Nuʿmān b. Awfā b. ʿAmr, and ʿUthmān b. Awfā. And Zayd b. al-Luṣayt was the one who fought ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb ؓ in the market of the Banū Qaynuqāʿ. He was the one who said, when the she-camel of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went astray: “Muḥammad claims that news of heaven comes to him, yet he does not know where his she-camel is.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, after the news of what the enemy of Allah had said in his saddle came to him—and Allah, blessed and exalted, directed His Messenger ﷺ to his she-camel: “A speaker said: ‘Muḥammad claims that news of heaven comes to him, yet he does not know where his she-camel is?’ By Allah, I know only what Allah has taught me, and Allah has directed me to her. She is in this mountain pass; a tree has held her back by her halter.” Some men of the Muslims went and found her where the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had said, and as he had described. And Rāfiʿ b. Ḥuraymila—he was the one about whom the Messenger ﷺ said, as it has reached us, when he died: “Today a great one among the great hypocrites has died.” And Rifāʿa b. Zayd b. al-Tābūt—he was the one to whom the Messenger of Allah ﷺ referred when the wind blew upon him while he was returning from the expedition against the Banū al-Muṣṭaliq. It became so severe upon him that the Muslims feared because of it. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to them: “Do not fear, for it has blown only because of the death of a great one among the great disbelievers.” When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrived in Madinah, he found that Rifāʿa b. Zayd b. al-Tābūt had died that very day on which the wind had blown. And Silsila b. Birhām, and Kināna b. Ṣūriyā.
