Translation
✧ Poem of Ibn al-Zibaʿrā concerning the affair of the Elephant. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zibaʿrā b. ʿAdī b. Qays b. ʿAdī b. Saʿd b. Sahm b. ʿAmr b. Huṣayṣ b. Kaʿb b. Luʾayy b. Ghālib b. Fihr said: Withdraw from the hollow of Makkah, for it has long been a place whose sanctuary none would seek to violate. Al-Shiʿrā was not created on the nights it was made inviolable, when no mighty one among mankind sought it. Ask the commander of the army about it what he saw, and its knower will soon inform the ignorant. Sixty thousand who did not return to their land, and their sick one did not live after the return. ʿĀd dwelt there and Jurhum before them, and God, above His servants, upholds it. Ibn Isḥāq said: Ibn al-Zibaʿrā means by his words “their sick one did not live after the return” Abrahah, when they carried him with them after what befell him befell him, until he died in Ṣanʿāʾ.
