His first sermon (peace be upon him)
[ أَوَّلُ خُطَبِهِ عَلَيْهِ الصَّلَاةُ وَالسَّلَامُ ] وَكَانَتْ أَوَّلُ خُطْبَةٍ خَطَبَهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ، فِيمَا بَلَغَنِي عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ - نَعُوذُ بِاَللَّهِ أَنْ نَقُولَ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ مَا لَمْ يَقُلْ - أَنَّهُ قَامَ فِيهِمْ، فَحَمِدَ اللَّهَ وَأَثْنَى عَلَيْهِ بِمَا هُوَ أَهْلُهُ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: أَمَّا بَعْدُ، أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ، فَقَدِّمُوا لِأَنْفُسِكُمْ. تَعَلَّمُنَّ وَاَللَّهِ لَيُصْعَقَنَّ أَحَدُكُمْ، ثُمَّ لَيَدَعَنَّ غَنَمَهُ لَيْسَ لَهَا رَاعٍ، ثُمَّ لَيَقُولَنَّ لَهُ رَبُّهُ، وَلَيْسَ لَهُ تَرْجُمَانٌ وَلَا حَاجِبٌ يَحْجُبُهُ دُونَهُ: أَلَمْ يَأْتِكَ رَسُولِي فَبَلَّغَكَ، وَآتَيْتُكَ مَالًا وَأَفْضَلْتُ عَلَيْكَ ؟ فَمَا قَدَّمْتَ لِنَفْسِكَ ؟ فَلَيَنْظُرَنَّ يَمِينًا وَشِمَالًا فَلَا يَرَى شَيْئًا، ثُمَّ لَيَنْظُرَنَّ قُدَّامَهُ فَلَا يَرَى غَيْرَ جَهَنَّمَ. فَمَنْ اسْتَطَاعَ أَنْ يَقِيَ وَجْهَهُ مِنْ النَّارِ وَلَوْ بِشِقٍّ مِنْ تَمْرَةٍ فَلْيَفْعَلْ، وَمَنْ لَمْ يَجِدْ فَبِكَلِمَةٍ طَيِّبَةٍ، فَإِنَّ بِهَا تُجْزَى الْحَسَنَةُ عَشْرَ أَمْثَالِهَا، إلَى سَبْعِ ماِئَةِ ضَعْفٍ، وَالسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ
Translation
✧ [ The first of his sermons, peace and blessings be upon him ] The first sermon that the Messenger of God ﷺ delivered, according to what reached me from Abū Salamah b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān — we seek refuge in God from saying about the Messenger of God ﷺ what he did not say — is that he stood among them, praised God, and lauded Him as He deserves, then said: "Now then, O people, send forth [good deeds] for yourselves. By God, one of you will surely be struck down, and then he will surely leave his sheep without a shepherd. Then his Lord will surely say to him, with no interpreter and no chamberlain to veil him from Him: 'Did My messenger not come to you and convey to you, and did I not give you wealth and bestow favors upon you? So what have you sent forth for yourself?' Then he will surely look to his right and to his left and see nothing, and then he will surely look before him and see nothing but Hell. So whoever can shield his face from the Fire, even with half a date, let him do so; and whoever cannot find that, then with a good word, for by it a good deed is repaid tenfold, up to seven hundred times. And peace be upon you and the mercy of God and His blessings."
