Translation
✧ [What happened between Hishām and his companions and Abū Jahl when they resolved to tear up the document] They made an appointment at the Khatm al-Ḥajūn by night in upper Makkah, and they gathered there. They settled their affair and pledged to one another to rise against the document until they annulled it. Zuhayr said: I will begin with you, and be the first to speak. When morning came, they went to their assemblies, and Zuhayr b. Abī Umayya went wearing a fine garment. He circumambulated the House seven times, then turned to the people and said: O people of Makkah, do we eat food and wear clothes while the Banū Hāshim perish, nothing being sold to them or bought from them? By God, I will not sit until this cutting, unjust document is torn up. Abū Jahl said—he was in a corner of the mosque: You lie; by God, it will not be torn. Zamʿa b. al-Aswad said: You, by God, are the greater liar. We did not approve of its writing when it was written. Abū al-Bakhtarī said: Zamʿa has spoken truly; we do not approve of what is written in it, nor do we acknowledge it. Al-Muṭʿim b. ʿAdī said: You two have spoken truly, and whoever says otherwise lies. We disavow before God it and what is written in it. Hishām b. ʿAmr said something similar. Abū Jahl said: This is a matter decided at night, counseled about in a place other than this one. He said: Abū Ṭālib was sitting in a corner of the mosque. Al-Muṭʿim rose to the document to tear it, and found that termites had eaten it except for "In Your name, O God." [The scribe of the document and the withering of his hand] The scribe of the document was Manṣūr b. ʿIkrima, and his hand withered, so they claim.
