Sirat Ibn Hisham 427
Translation
✧ [The reason for Abū Bakr's departure from the protection of Ibn al-Dughunnah] She said: Abū Bakr had a mosque at the gate of his house in Banū Jumaḥ in which he used to pray, and he was a tender-hearted man; when he recited the Qurʾān he would weep. She said: The boys, the slaves, and the women would stop by him, marveling at what they saw of his manner. She said: Some men of Quraysh went to Ibn al-Dughunnah and said to him, 'O Ibn al-Dughunnah, you did not grant protection to this man so that he might harm us. He is a man who, when he prays and recites what Muḥammad ﷺ has brought, becomes tender and weeps. He has a manner and a way about him, and we fear for our boys, our women, and our weak ones that he may seduce them. So go to him and order him to enter his house and do there whatever he wishes.' She said: Ibn al-Dughunnah went to him and said, 'O Abū Bakr, I did not grant you protection so that you might harm your people. They have come to dislike the place where you are and have been hurt by that from you. So enter your house and do there whatever you like.' He said, 'Shall I return your protection to you and be content with the protection of God?' He said, 'Return my protection to me.' He said, 'I have returned it to you.' She said: Ibn al-Dughunnah stood up and said, 'O assembly of Quraysh, Ibn Abī Quḥāfah has returned my protection to me, so your affair with your companion is yours.' Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. al-Qāsim related to me, from his father al-Qāsim b. Muḥammad, who said: A fool among the fools of Quraysh met him while he was heading to the Kaʿbah and threw dust on his head. He said: Al-Walīd b. al-Mughīrah, or al-ʿĀṣ b. Wāʾil, passed by Abū Bakr. He said: Abū Bakr said, 'Do you not see what this fool is doing?' He said, 'You did that to yourself.' He said: And he was saying, 'O Lord, how forbearing You are! O Lord, how forbearing You are! O Lord, how forbearing You are!'
