Translation

✧ The story of Abū Salamah ؓ in his seeking protection [The polytheists' annoyance with Abū Ṭālib for his protection, and the defense of Abū Lahab, and the poetry of Abū Ṭālib concerning that] Ibn Isḥāq said: As for Abū Salamah b. ʿAbd al-Asad, my father Isḥāq b. Yasār narrated to me from Salamah b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar b. Abī Salamah that he narrated to him: When Abū Salamah sought the protection of Abū Ṭālib, men from Banū Makhzūm walked to him and said to him, "O Abū Ṭālib, you have protected your nephew Muḥammad from us. What is it with you and our companion that you protect him from us?" He said, "He sought my protection, and he is my sister's son. If I do not protect my sister's son, I would not protect my brother's son." Then Abū Lahab stood up and said, "O assembly of Quraysh, by God, you have gone too far against this old man. You keep attacking him over his protection among his people. By God, either you stop it, or we will stand with him in everything he stands for, until he achieves what he wants." They said, "Rather, we will turn away from what you dislike, O Abū ʿUtbah." He was a supporter and helper for him against the Messenger of God ﷺ, so they complied with that. Abū Ṭālib was encouraged when he heard him say what he said, and he hoped that he would stand with him concerning the affair of the Messenger of God ﷺ. So Abū Ṭālib said, urging Abū Lahab to support him and support the Messenger of God ﷺ: A man whose uncle is Abū ʿUtaybah is indeed in a meadow where wrongs are not imposed. I say to him—and where is my counsel to him?—O Abū Muʿṭib, keep your rank firm, And do not, as long as you live, accept from time a portion by which you are reviled, whether you descend to the fairs. Leave the path of incapacity to others among them, for you were not created to cling to incapacity. And fight, for war is half, and you will never see a brother of war given disgrace until he makes peace. And how, when they have not committed a grave offense against you, nor forsaken you in gain or loss? May God reward ʿAbd Shams and Nawfal and Taym and Makhzūm from us with disobedience and sin, For their splitting, after love and intimacy, our assembly, so that they might attain what is forbidden. You have lied, by the House of God; Muḥammad will be plundered, while you have not yet seen a day when he stands at the mountain pass. Ibn Hishām said: "nubzā" means "to be stripped, plundered." Ibn Hishām said: One verse remained from it which we omitted.
