Sirat Ibn Hisham 414
Translation
✧ [How Ibn Masʿūd explained al-muhl] It has reached us from al-Ḥasan (al-Baṣrī) that he said: ʿAbd Allāh b. Masʿūd was the governor of ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb over the treasury of al-Kūfah, and that one day he ordered silver to be melted, and it was made to take on different colors, and he said: Is there anyone at the door? They said: Yes. He said: Admit them; so they were admitted, and he said: The least of what you will see resembling al-muhl is this. And the poet said: My Lord gives him to drink the hot water of al-muhl, he gulps it down; it roasts the faces, so it is in his belly a melting. And it is said that al-muhl is the pus of the body. [Citing the words of Abū Bakr in explanation of al-muhl] It has reached us that Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq ؓ, when he was near death, ordered two worn garments to be washed and he be shrouded in them. ʿĀʾishah said to him: God has made you free of need of them, O father, so buy a shroud. He said: It is only an hour until it becomes al-muhl. The poet said: He mixed with water from it a foul muhl, then he gave the backs to drink after the first watering. Ibn Isḥāq said: So God Most High sent down concerning him: And the accursed tree in the Qurʾān; and We frighten them, but it only increases them in great insolence.
