Sirat Ibn Hisham 415
Translation
✧ [Ibn Umm Maktūm and the Revelation of Sūrat ʿAbasa] Al-Walīd b. al-Mughīrah stopped with the Messenger of God ﷺ, while the Messenger of God ﷺ was speaking with him, having hoped for his submission to Islam. While he was thus engaged, Ibn Umm Maktūm the blind passed by him and spoke to the Messenger of God ﷺ, and began asking him to recite the Qurʾān to him. That distressed the Messenger of God ﷺ until it annoyed him, because he distracted him from the matter of al-Walīd and from the hope he had for his submission. When he persisted with him, he turned away from him frowning and left him. Then God Most High revealed concerning him: "He frowned and turned away because the blind man came to him" up to His saying: "in honored sheets, exalted and purified" (Q 80:1–14), meaning: I have only sent you as a bearer of good tidings and a warner; I have not singled you out for one person rather than another, so do not withhold it from one who seeks it, and do not devote yourself with it to one who does not desire it. Ibn Hishām said: Ibn Umm Maktūm was one of the Banū ʿĀmir b. Luʾayy; his name was ʿAbdullāh, and it is also said: ʿAmr.
