Translation
✧ ʿUmar had heard, when he drew near to the house, the recitation of Khabbāb to them both. When he entered, he said: “What is this murmuring that I heard?” They said to him: “You heard nothing.” He said: “Yes, by God, I have been told that you two have followed Muḥammad in his religion,” and he seized his son-in-law Saʿīd b. Zayd. His sister Fāṭimah bt. al-Khaṭṭāb rose to him to hold him back from her husband, and he struck her and wounded her head. When he had done that, his sister and his son-in-law said to him: “Yes, we have submitted and believed in God and His Messenger, so do what seems fit to you.” When ʿUmar saw the blood on his sister, he regretted what he had done and relented, and said to his sister: “Give me this page which I heard you reciting just now, that I may see what this thing brought by Muḥammad is.” ʿUmar was a scribe. When he said that, his sister said to him: “We fear for it on your account.” He said: “Do not fear.” And he swore to her by his gods that he would return it to her when he had read it. When he said that, she hoped for his conversion, and said to him: “Brother, you are impure in your polytheism, and only the pure touches it.” So ʿUmar rose and performed the major ablution, and she gave him the page, in which was “Ṭā Hā.” He read it, and when he had read a portion of it, he said: “How beautiful and noble is this speech!” When Khabbāb heard that, he came out to him and said to him: “ʿUmar, by God, I hope that God has singled you out for the prayer of His Prophet, for I heard him yesterday saying: ‘O God, strengthen Islam with Abū al-Ḥakam b. Hishām or with ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb.’ So God, God, ʿUmar!” At that ʿUmar said to him: “Then guide me, Khabbāb, to Muḥammad, that I may come to him and submit.” Khabbāb said to him: “He is in a house at al-Ṣafā, and with him in it are a group of his companions.” So ʿUmar took his sword and girded it on, then made for the Messenger of God ﷺ and his companions and knocked at the door. When they heard his voice, a man of the companions of the Messenger of God ﷺ rose and looked through a chink of the door and saw him girt with the sword. He returned to the Messenger of God ﷺ in alarm and said: “Messenger of God, this is ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb girt with the sword?” Ḥamzah b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib said: “Admit him. If he has come seeking good, we shall offer it to him, and if he has come seeking evil, we shall kill him with his own sword.” The Messenger of God ﷺ said: “Admit him.” The man admitted him, and the Messenger of God ﷺ rose to him until he met him in the chamber, and took hold of his belt, or of the gathered part of his cloak, then pulled him with a violent pull and said: “What has brought you, son of al-Khaṭṭāb? By God, I do not think you will desist until God sends down upon you a calamity.” ʿUmar said: “Messenger of God, I have come to you to believe in God and His Messenger and in what he has brought from God.” He said: The Messenger of God ﷺ uttered a takbīr, and the people of the house among the companions of the Messenger of God ﷺ knew that ʿUmar had submitted. The companions of the Messenger of God ﷺ dispersed from their places, and they were strengthened in themselves when ʿUmar submitted along with the submission of Ḥamzah, and they knew that the two of them would defend the Messenger of God ﷺ and that through them they would obtain justice from their enemy. This is the account of the transmitters of the people of Madinah concerning the conversion of ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb when he submitted.
