Translation

✧ Abrahah al-Ashram gained control over the affair of Yemen and killed Aryāṭ. [What occurred between Aryāṭ and Abrahah.] Ibn Isḥāq said: Aryāṭ remained in the land of Yemen for some years in that authority of his. Then Abrahah the Abyssinian disputed with him over the affair of the Abyssinians in Yemen—and he was among his troops—until the Abyssinians split over the two of them, and a faction of them sided with each. Then each marched against the other. When the people drew near, Abrahah sent to Aryāṭ: “You will accomplish nothing by having the Abyssinians meet one another until you exhaust them. So come out to me, and I will come out to you. Whichever of us strikes his companion, his troops will go over to him.” Aryāṭ sent to him: “You have been fair.” So Abrahah went out to him—he was a short, fleshy, stocky man, and he was a man of religion in Christianity—and Aryāṭ went out to him. He was a handsome, huge, tall man, and in his hand was a spear of his. A slave of Abrahah called ʿAtwadah stood behind him, protecting his back. Aryāṭ raised the spear and struck Abrahah, aiming for the top of his head, but the spear fell on Abrahah's forehead and split his eyebrow, his nose, his eye, and his lip. For that reason he was named Abrahah al-Ashram. Then ʿAtwadah charged at Aryāṭ from behind Abrahah and killed him. The troops of Aryāṭ went over to Abrahah, and the Abyssinians in Yemen united behind him, and Abrahah paid blood-money for Aryāṭ.
