Translation

✧ She said: By God, while we were in that state, a man of Abyssinia descended upon him to contend with him for his kingship. She said: By God, I do not think we ever grieved with a grief more severe upon us than the grief we grieved at that time, fearing that that man would prevail over the Najāshī, and then there would come a man who did not know of our right what the Najāshī had known of it. She said: The Najāshī marched against him, and between the two of them lay the breadth of the Nile. She said: The companions of the Messenger of God ﷺ said: Who is a man who will go out until he attends the battle of the people, then come to us with the news? She said: Al-Zubayr b. al-ʿAwwām said: I will. They said: Then you. And he was the youngest of the people in age. She said: So they blew up a water-skin for him, and he placed it on his chest, then he swam upon it until he came out to the side of the Nile where the meeting of the people was, then he went on until he attended them. She said: We prayed to God Most High for the Najāshī to prevail over his enemy and to establish him firmly in his lands. She said: By God, while we were in that state, awaiting what was to come, al-Zubayr appeared, running; he flashed with his garment, saying: Be glad! The Najāshī has triumphed, and God has destroyed his enemy, and has established him firmly in his lands. She said: By God, I do not think we ever rejoiced with a joy like it. She said: The Najāshī returned, after God had destroyed his enemy and established him firmly in his lands, and the affair of Abyssinia became orderly under him, and we remained with him in the best of abodes, until we came to the Messenger of God ﷺ while he was in Makkah.
