Translation

✧ [ The statement of the emigrants concerning Jesus ﷺ in the presence of the Negus ] She said: When they came out from his presence, ʿAmr b. al-ʿĀṣ said: By God, I will come to him tomorrow concerning them with what will utterly cut off their prosperity. She said: ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Rabīʿah, who was the more God-fearing of the two men among us, said to him: Do not do that, for they have ties of kinship with us, even though they have opposed us. He said: By God, I will inform him that they assert that Jesus son of Mary is a servant. She said: Then on the morrow he went to him and said: O king, they say a tremendous thing concerning Jesus son of Mary; send to them and ask them about what they say concerning him. She said: So he sent to them to ask them about him. She said: And nothing like it had ever befallen us. The people gathered, then they said to one another: What will you say concerning Jesus son of Mary when he asks you about him? They said: By God, we will say what God has said, and what our Prophet brought us, whatever may be. She said: When they entered upon him, he said to them: What do you say concerning Jesus son of Mary? She said: Jaʿfar b. Abī Ṭālib said: We say concerning him that which our Prophet ﷺ brought us: he is the servant of God and His messenger and His spirit and His word, which He cast to Mary the pure virgin. She said: The Negus struck his hand to the ground and took from it a stick, then said: By God, Jesus son of Mary did not exceed what you have said by this stick. She said: His patriarchs snorted around him when he said what he said, and he said: Even if you snort, by God, go, for you are shyūm in my land—ash-shyūm means the secure ones—whoever reviles you shall pay a fine. Then he said: Whoever reviles you shall pay a fine. Then he said: Whoever reviles you shall pay a fine. I would not love to have a mountain of gold, and that I had harmed a man among you—Ibn Hishām said: It is said dabar of gold, and it is said: you are suyūm; and ad-dabar, in the language of the Abyssinians, means the mountain—return to the two men their gifts, for I have no need of them. By God, God did not take a bribe from me when He restored my kingdom to me, that I should take a bribe in this matter, and He did not make people obey me that I should obey them in it. She said: So the two men went out from his presence disgraced, with what they had brought returned to them, and we stayed with him in the best abode, with the best neighbor.
