✧ [The account of Umm Salamah concerning the two messengers of Quraysh to the Negus] Ibn Ishaq said: Muhammad b. Muslim al-Zuhri narrated to me, from Abu Bakr b. ʿAbd al-Rahman b. al-Harith b. Hisham al-Makhzumi, from Umm Salamah bt. Abi Umayyah b. al-Mughirah, the wife of the Messenger of God ﷺ. She said: When we alighted in the land of Abyssinia, we had there the best neighbor, the Negus. We were secure in our religion, and we worshipped God Almighty without being harmed or hearing anything we disliked. When that reached Quraysh, they conspired among themselves to send to the Negus two stalwart men from among them concerning us, and to send the Negus gifts from the choice goods of Makkah; and of the most admirable things that came to him from it were tanned hides. So they gathered for him many hides, and they did not leave any of his patricians without giving him a gift. Then they sent with that ʿAbd Allah b. Abi Rabiʿah and ʿAmr b. al-ʿAs, and they charged them with their affair, saying to them: Deliver to every patrician his gift before you speak to the Negus about the emigrants, then present the Negus his gifts, then ask him to surrender them to you before he speaks with them. She said: So they set out until they came to the Negus, while we were with him in the best abode, with the best neighbor. There remained none of his patricians to whom they did not deliver his gift before speaking to the Negus. And they said to every patrician among them: Verily, there have come to the king's land from us foolish youths who have abandoned the religion of their people and have not entered your religion, and they have brought an invented religion which neither we nor you know. The nobles of their people have sent us to the king concerning them, that he may return them to them. So when we speak to the king about them, advise him to surrender them to us and not to speak with them, for their people are more aware of them and more knowledgeable of what they reproached against them. They said to the two: Yes. Then they presented their gifts to the Negus, and he accepted them from them. Then they spoke to him, and said: O king, there have come to your land from us foolish youths who have abandoned the religion of their people and have not entered your religion, and they have brought a religion they have invented, which neither we nor you know. The nobles of their people, among their fathers, uncles, and clans, have sent us to you concerning them, that you may return them to them, for they are more aware of them and more knowledgeable of what they reproached against them and admonished them for. She said: There was nothing more hateful to ʿAbd Allah b. Abi Rabiʿah and ʿAmr b. al-ʿAs than that the Negus should hear their words. She said: His patricians around him said: They have spoken truly, O king; their people are more aware of them and more knowledgeable of what they reproached against them, so surrender them to them, that they may return them to their lands and their people. She said: The Negus became angry, then said: No, by God, I will not surrender them to them. A people who have sought my protection, settled in my land, and chosen me over all others shall hardly be so until I summon them and ask them about what these two say concerning their affair. If they are as they say, I will surrender them to them and return them to their people. But if they are otherwise, I will protect them from them and treat them well as long as they seek my protection.
