Translation
✧ [Abū Ṭālib’s verses to the Negus urging him to defend the emigrants] When Abū Ṭālib saw that from their opinion and what they had sent the two of them for, he composed some verses addressed to the Negus, urging him to treat them as good neighbours and to defend them: Alas, would that I knew how Jaʿfar and ʿAmr fare in exile, while the nearest kin are the enemies of the enemy! Have the Negus’s deeds reached Jaʿfar and his companions, or has some mischief-maker hindered that? Know, may you never be cursed, that you are a noble and generous man, so no one who seeks your protection will be wretched by you. Know that God has increased you in expansiveness and the means of all good, all of them cleaving to you, And that you are an overflowing giver of abundant buckets whose benefit reaches both enemies and kin.
