The account of Daws Dhū Thaʿlabān and the beginning of Abyssinian rule
[ نَسَبُ زُبَيْدٍ ] قَالَ ابْنُ هِشَامٍ: زُبَيْدُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ بْنِ مَازِنِ بْنِ مُنَبِّهِ بْنِ صَعْبِ بْنِ سَعْدِ الْعَشِيرَةِ بْنِ مَذْحِجَ، وَيُقَالُ زُبَيْدُ بْنُ مُنَبِّهِ بْنِ صَعْبِ بْنِ سَعْدِ الْعَشِيرَةِ وَيُقَالُ زُبَيْدُ بْنِ صَعْبٍ. وَمُرَادُ: يُحَابِرُ بْنُ مَذْحِجَ. [ سَبَبُ قَوْلِ عَمْرِو بْنِ مَعِدِي كَرِبٍ هَذَا الشِّعْرَ ] قَالَ ابْنُ هِشَامٍ: وَحَدَّثَنِي أَبُو عُبَيْدَةَ، قَالَ: كَتَبَ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ ؓ إلَى سَلْمَانَ بْنِ رَبِيعَةَ الْبَاهِلِيِّ وَبَاهِلَةَ بْنِ يَعْصُرَ بْنِ سَعْدِ بْنِ قَيْسِ بْنِ عَيْلَانَ، وَهُوَ بِأَرْمِينِيَّةِ يَأْمُرُهُ أَنْ يُفَضِّلَ أَصْحَابَ الْخَيْلِ الْعِرَابِ عَلَى أَصْحَابِ الْخَيْلِ الْمَقَارِفِ فِي الْعَطَاءِ، فَعَرَضَ الْخَيْلَ، فَمَرَّ بِهِ فَرَسُ عَمْرِو بْنِ مَعْدِي كَرِبٍ، فَقَالَ لَهُ سَلْمَانُ: فَرَسُكَ هَذَا مُقْرِفٌ، فَغَضِبَ عَمْرٌو، وَقَالَ: هَجِينٌ عَرَفَ هَجِينًا مِثْلَهُ، فَوَثَبَ إلَيْهِ قَيْسٌ فَتَوَعَّدَهُ، فَقَالَ عَمْرُو هَذِهِ الْأَبْيَاتِ
Translation
✧ [The lineage of Zubayd] Ibn Hishām said: Zubayd b. Salamah b. Māzin b. Munabbih b. Ṣaʿb b. Saʿd al-ʿAshīrah b. Madhḥij. And it is said: Zubayd b. Munabbih b. Ṣaʿb b. Saʿd al-ʿAshīrah, and it is said: Zubayd b. Ṣaʿb. And Murād is Yuḥābir b. Madhḥij. [The reason for ʿAmr b. Maʿdī Karib's reciting this poetry] Ibn Hishām said: Abū ʿUbaydah narrated to me, saying: ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb ؓ wrote to Salmān b. Rabīʿah al-Bāhilī—and Bāhilah is b. Yaʿṣur b. Saʿd b. Qays b. ʿAylān—while he was in Armenia, commanding him to give preference to the owners of purebred Arabian horses over the owners of horses of mixed breed in the stipend. So he reviewed the horses, and the horse of ʿAmr b. Maʿdī Karib passed by him. Salmān said to him: "This horse of yours is of mixed breed." ʿAmr became angry and said: "A lowborn man has recognized one like himself." Qays leapt at him and threatened him, and ʿAmr recited these verses.
