Sirat Ibn Hisham 352
Translation
✧ [Those whom Abū Bakr manumitted along with Bilāl] Then, along with him, before he emigrated to Madinah, he manumitted six slaves for the sake of Islam, Bilāl being the seventh of them: ʿĀmir b. Fuhayrah, who was present at Badr and Uḥud and was killed as a martyr on the day of Biʾr Maʿūnah; and Umm ʿUbayṣ and Zinnīrah, whose eyesight was afflicted when he manumitted her. Quraysh said, 'Nothing took away her eyesight except al-Lāt and al-ʿUzzā.' She said, 'They have lied, by the House of God; al-Lāt and al-ʿUzzā neither harm nor benefit.' And God restored her eyesight. And he manumitted al-Nahdiyyah and her daughter, who belonged to a woman of Banū ʿAbd al-Dār. He passed by them after their mistress had sent them with flour of hers, and she was saying, 'By God, I will never manumit you two.' Abū Bakr ؓ said, 'Release them, O Umm Fulān.' She said, 'Release them yourself; you have corrupted them, so manumit them.' He said, 'For how much are they?' She said, 'For such-and-such.' He said, 'I have taken them, and they are free women. Return her flour to her.' They said, 'Shall we finish with it, O Abū Bakr, and then return it to her?' He said, 'That is up to you, if you wish.' And he passed by the slave girl of Banū Muʾammil, a clan of Banū ʿAdī b. Kaʿb, and she was a Muslim, while ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb was torturing her to make her abandon Islam—he was then a polytheist—and he was beating her until, when he grew weary, he said, 'I apologize to you; I have only stopped out of weariness.' She would say, 'May God do the same to you.' Abū Bakr bought her and manumitted her.
