Translation
✧ Mention of the aggression of the polytheists against the weakened ones among those who embraced Islam, with harm and temptation. [Quraysh's harshness toward those who embraced Islam] Ibn Isḥāq said: Then they turned aggressively against those who embraced Islam and followed the Messenger of God ﷺ among his companions. Every tribe leaped upon the Muslims among them, and they began to imprison them and torment them with beating, hunger, thirst, and the scorching heat of Makkah when the heat grew intense—those among them who were deemed weak—tempting them away from their religion. Among them were those who were tempted by the severity of the affliction that befell them, and among them were those who held firm for them, and God protected them from them. [What Bilāl endured after his Islam, and what Abū Bakr did to free him] Bilāl, the freedman of Abū Bakr ؓ, belonged to some of the Banū Jumaḥ, being one of their home-born slaves. He is Bilāl b. Rabāḥ, and his mother's name was Ḥamāmah. He was truthful in Islam and pure of heart. Umayyah b. Khalaf b. Wahb b. Ḥudhāfah b. Jumaḥ would bring him out when the midday heat blazed, and throw him on his back in the open valley floor of Makkah. Then he would order a great rock to be placed on his chest. Then he would say to him: "No, by God! You will remain like this until you die, or you disbelieve in Muḥammad and worship al-Lāt and al-ʿUzzā." But he would say, while in that affliction: "One, One." Ibn Isḥāq said: Hishām b. ʿUrwah narrated to me from his father, who said: Waraqah b. Nawfal would pass by him while he was being tormented in that way, and he was saying: "One, One." He would say: "One, One, by God, O Bilāl." Then he would turn to Umayyah b. Khalaf and those of the Banū Jumaḥ who were doing that to him, and say: "I swear by God, if you kill him for this, I will surely take him as a ḥanān." Until one day Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq (ibn Abī Quḥāfah) ؓ passed by him while they were doing that to him—Abū Bakr's house was among the Banū Jumaḥ—and he said to Umayyah b. Khalaf: "Will you not fear God regarding this poor man? Until when?" He said: "You are the one who corrupted him, so rescue him from what you see." Abū Bakr said: "I will do it. I have a black slave, sturdier and stronger than him, upon your religion. I will give him to you in exchange for him." He said: "I accept." He said: "He is yours." So Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq ؓ gave him that slave of his and took Bilāl and freed him.
