The account of Daws Dhū Thaʿlabān and the beginning of Abyssinian rule

Translation

✧ [The victory of Aryāṭ, the defeat of Dhū Nuwās and his death] So Daws came to the Negus with Caesar's letter, and he sent with him seventy thousand Abyssinians, and appointed over them a man of theirs called Aryāṭ, and with him in his army was Abrahah al-Ashram. Aryāṭ rode the sea until he disembarked on the coast of Yemen, and with him was Daws Dhū Thaʿlabān. Dhū Nuwās marched against him with Ḥimyar and those of the tribes of Yemen who obeyed him. When they met, Dhū Nuwās and his companions were defeated. When Dhū Nuwās saw what had befallen him and his people, he turned his horse toward the sea, then struck it and entered with it. He waded with it through the shallow water of the sea until he reached its deep part, and he plunged into it, and that was the last seen of him. Aryāṭ entered Yemen and took possession of it.
