Translation

✧ [What God Most High revealed in reply to the saying of Ibn Abī Umayyah] And God revealed concerning what ʿAbdallāh b. Abī Umayyah said: “And they said: We will never believe in you until you cause a spring to gush forth for us from the earth; or you have a garden of date-palms and vines, and cause rivers to gush forth in their midst with a gushing; or you cause the sky to fall upon us in pieces, as you have claimed; or you bring God and the angels before [us] face to face; or you have a house of gold ornament, or you ascend into the sky—and we will never believe in your ascending until you send down to us a book that we may read. Say: Glory be to my Lord! Am I anything but a mortal messenger?” Ibn Hishām said: al-yanbūʿ is what gushes forth of water from the earth and elsewhere; its plural is yanābīʿ. Ibn Harmah—whose name is Ibrāhīm b. ʿAlī al-Fihrī—said: “And when you pour forth in every abode a tear, the tear-ducts are drained dry, and your tears are a gushing spring.” This verse is in a qaṣīdah of his. Al-kisaf are the pieces of punishment; its singular is kisfah, like sidrah and sidar. It is also the singular of al-kisf. Al-qabīl may mean face-to-face and direct viewing, as in His saying, Most High: “or the punishment comes to them face to face,” meaning openly. Abū ʿUbaydah recited to me from Aʿshā Banī Qays b. Thaʿlabah: “I make peace with you until you return with the like of it, like the cry of a pregnant woman whose midwife assists her.” He means the midwife (al-qābilah), because she faces her and receives her child. This verse is in a qaṣīdah of his. It is said: al-qabīl—its plural is qubul, meaning groups. In the Book of God Most High: “and We gathered unto them all things, face to face (qubulan).” So qubul is the plural of qabīl, like subul is the plural of sabīl, surur the plural of sarīr, and qumuṣ the plural of qamīṣ. Al-qabīl also occurs in a proverb, namely their saying: “He does not know qabīl from dabīr,” meaning he does not know what comes forward from what goes back. Al-Kumayt b. Zayd said: “Matters dispersed in their two directions, so they knew not the back-spun from the front-spun.” This verse is in a qaṣīdah of his. It is said: by qabīl here is meant the spinning (al-fatl); what is spun toward the forearm is qabīl, and what is spun toward the fingertips is dabīr, and this is from the coming forward and going back that I have mentioned. It is said: the spinning of the spindle (al-mighzal); when the spindle is spun toward the knee it is qabīl, and when it is spun toward the hip it is dabīr. Al-qabīl also means a man’s people. Al-zukhruf is gold; al-muzakhraf is that which is adorned with gold. Al-ʿAjjāj said: “Of a ruined trace which in the evening you would imagine its outlines to be a muṣḥaf, and the gilded, gold-adorned.” These two verses are in a rajaz poem of his. It is also said of everything adorned: muzakhraf.
