✧ Mention of those Companions who became Muslim through the call of Abu Bakr ؓ [The Islam of ʿUthmān, al-Zubayr, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, Saʿd, and Ṭalḥah] He said: Through his call—according to what has reached me—ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān b. Abī al-ʿĀṣ b. Umayyah b. ʿAbd Shams b. ʿAbd Manāf b. Quṣayy b. Kilāb b. Murrah b. Kaʿb b. Luʾayy b. Ghālib, al-Zubayr b. al-ʿAwwām b. Khuwaylid b. Asad b. ʿAbd al-ʿUzzā b. Quṣayy b. Kilāb b. Murrah b. Kaʿb b. Luʾayy, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAwf b. ʿAbd ʿAwf b. ʿAbd b. al-Ḥārith b. Zuhrah b. Kilāb b. Murrah b. Kaʿb b. Luʾayy, Saʿd b. Abī Waqqāṣ—and the name of Abū Waqqāṣ is Mālik b. Uhayb b. ʿAbd Manāf b. Zuhrah b. Murrah b. Kilāb b. Murrah b. Kaʿb b. Luʾayy—and Ṭalḥah b. ʿUbayd Allāh b. ʿUthmān b. ʿAmr b. Kaʿb b. Saʿd b. Taym b. Murrah b. Kaʿb b. Luʾayy became Muslim. He brought them to the Messenger of God ﷺ when they responded to him, and they became Muslim and prayed. The Messenger of God ﷺ used to say, according to what has reached me: I have not called anyone to Islam but that there was some hesitation, consideration, and wavering in him, except what was from Abū Bakr b. Abī Quḥāfah: he did not linger when I mentioned it to him, and he did not waver in it. Ibn Hishām said: His saying “through his call” is from other than Ibn Isḥāq. Ibn Hishām said: His saying “ʿakama” means “he lingered.” Ruʾbah b. al-ʿAjjāj said: “And he turned away, leaping with it, and did not linger.” Ibn Isḥāq said: These eight individuals were those who preceded the people to Islam: they prayed and believed the Messenger of God ﷺ in what came to him from God.
