Translation

✧ The Islam of Zayd b. Harithah secondly. Ibn Ishaq said: Then Zayd b. Harithah b. Shurahbil b. Ka'b b. 'Abd al-'Uzza b. Imri' al-Qays al-Kalbi, the client of the Messenger of God ﷺ, embraced Islam. He was the first male to embrace Islam, and he prayed after 'Ali b. Abi Talib. [His lineage and the reason for the Messenger of God's ﷺ adoption of him] Ibn Hisham said: Zayd b. Harithah b. Sharahil b. Ka'b b. 'Abd al-'Uzza b. Imri' al-Qays b. 'Amir b. al-Nu'man b. 'Amir b. 'Abd Wudd b. 'Awf b. Kinanah b. Bakr b. 'Awf b. 'Udhrah b. Zayd al-Lat b. Rufaydah b. Thawr b. Kalb b. Wabarah. Hakim b. Hizam b. Khuwaylid had come from Syria with slaves, among them Zayd b. Harithah, a servant. His paternal aunt Khadijah bt. Khuwaylid entered upon him, and she was then with the Messenger of God ﷺ. He said to her: Choose, aunt, whichever of these boys you wish, and he is yours. She chose Zayd and took him. The Messenger of God ﷺ saw him with her and asked her to give him to him, and she gave him to him. The Messenger of God ﷺ freed him and adopted him, and that was before revelation came to him. [Harithah's poetry when he lost his son Zayd and his coming to the Messenger ﷺ asking him to return him to him] His father Harithah had grieved for him with intense grief and wept for him when he lost him, and he said: I wept for Zayd and did not know what he had done—is he alive, to be hoped for, or has death come before him? By God, I do not know, and I am asking: did the plain take you after me, or did the mountain take you? Would that I knew whether time ever brings you back; my fill of the world would be your return to me, enough. The sun reminds me of him at its rising, and his memory is presented when its setting sets. And when the winds blow, they stir up his memory; how long is my sorrow for him and my fear! I will exert the camels' brisk pace in the land, striving, and I will not tire of roaming, nor will the camels tire, in my lifetime, or until my death comes to me; for every man perishes, though hope deludes him. Then he came to him while he was with the Messenger of God ﷺ, and the Messenger of God ﷺ said to him: If you wish, stay with me, and if you wish, depart with your father. He said: Rather, I will stay with you. He remained with the Messenger of God ﷺ until God sent him, and he believed him and embraced Islam, and prayed with him. When God, mighty and glorious, revealed: 'Call them by their fathers,' he said: I am Zayd b. Harithah.
