Account of the woman who offered herself in marriage to ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib
ذِكْرُ الْمَرْأَةِ الْمُتَعَرِّضَةِ لِنِكَاحِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ [ رَفْضُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ طَلَبَ الْمَرْأَةِ الَّتِي عَرَضَتْ نَفْسَهَا عَلَيْهِ ] قَالَ ابْنُ إسْحَاقَ: ثُمَّ انْصَرَفَ عَبْدُ الْمُطَّلِبِ آخِذًا بِيَدِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، فَمَرَّ بِهِ - فِيمَا يَزْعُمُونَ - عَلَى امْرَأَةٍ مِنْ بَنِي أَسَدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْعُزَّى بْنِ قُصَيِّ بْنِ كِلَابِ بْنِ مُرَّةَ بْنِ كَعْبِ بْنِ لُؤَيِّ بْنِ غَالِبِ بْنِ فِهْرِ، وَهِيَ أُخْتُ وَرَقَةَ بْنِ نَوْفَلِ بْنِ أَسَدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْعُزَّى، وَهِيَ عِنْدَ الْكَعْبَةِ؛ فَقَالَتْ لَهُ حِينَ نَظَرَتْ إلَى وَجْهِهِ: أَيْنَ تَذْهَبُ يَا عَبْدَ اللَّهِ ؟ قَالَ: مَعَ أَبِي، قَالَتْ: لَكَ مِثْلُ الْإِبِلِ الَّتِي نُحِرَتْ عَنْكَ، وَقَعْ عَلَيَّ الْآنَ، قَالَ: أَنَا مَعَ أَبِي، وَلَا أَسْتَطِيعُ خِلَافَهُ، وَلَا فِرَاقَهُ.
Translation
✧ Mention of the woman who offered herself in marriage to ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib [ʿAbd Allāh’s refusal of the woman who offered herself to him] Ibn Isḥāq said: Then ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib departed, taking ʿAbd Allāh by the hand. He passed by – as they allege – a woman of the Banū Asad b. ʿAbd al-ʿUzzā b. Quṣayy b. Kilāb b. Murrah b. Kaʿb b. Luʾayy b. Ghālib b. Fihr. She was the sister of Waraqah b. Nawfal b. Asad b. ʿAbd al-ʿUzzā, and she was at the Kaʿbah. When she looked at his face, she said to him: “Where are you going, O ʿAbd Allāh?” He said: “With my father.” She said: “You shall have the like of the camels that were sacrificed for you. Lie with me now.” He said: “I am with my father, and I cannot oppose him or part from him.”
