Account of ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib's vow to sacrifice his son

Translation

✧ Mention of ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib's vow to sacrifice his son. Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib b. Hāshim—as they allege, and Allah knows best—had vowed, when he encountered from Quraysh what he encountered at the digging of Zamzam, that if ten sons were born to him and they reached manhood with him so that they might protect him, he would surely sacrifice one of them to Allah at the Kaʿbah. When his sons became ten, and he knew that they would protect him, he gathered them, then informed them of his vow, and called them to fulfill it for Allah. They obeyed him and said: 'How shall we do?' He said: 'Let each man of you take an arrow and write his name on it, then come to me.' They did so, then came to him. He entered with them upon Hubal in the interior of the Kaʿbah. Hubal was over a well in the interior of the Kaʿbah, and that well was the one in which what was offered to the Kaʿbah was gathered.
