Sirat Ibn Hisham 175
The excellence of Zamzam and the poetry composed about it
Translation
✧: We inherited glory from our forefathers, and it raised us aloft. Did we not give drink to the pilgrims and slaughter the slow-paced, generous camels? And at the turn of the fates we are met as mighty supports. If we perish, we have not been owned, and who is everlasting forever? And Zamzam is in our root, and we pierce the eye of the one who envies. Ibn Hishām said: These verses are in an ode of his. Ibn Isḥāq said: And Ḥudhayfah b. Ghānim, brother of the Banū ʿAdī b. Kaʿb b. Luʾayy, said:: And the cupbearer of the pilgrims, then for good is Hāshim, and ʿAbd Manāf, that Qurayshī lord. He folded up Zamzam by the Maqām, and its drinking-place became a boast above every possessor of boast. Ibn Hishām said: He means ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib b. Hāshim. These two verses are in an ode of Ḥudhayfah b. Ghānim which I shall mention in its place, if God Almighty wills.
