Hāshim's Administration of the Rifādah and Siqāyah and What He Used to Do When the Pilgrims Arrived

Translation

✧ [Hāshim's assumption of ar-Rifādah and as-Siqāyah and what he used to do when the pilgrims arrived] Ibn Isḥāq said: Hāshim b. ʿAbd Manāf took charge of ar-rifādah and as-siqāyah. That was because ʿAbd Shams was a man who travelled much, rarely staying in Makkah, and was poor with many children, while Hāshim was wealthy. It is claimed that when the pilgrims arrived, he would stand before Quraysh and say: "O assembly of Quraysh, you are the neighbours of God and the people of His House. In this season there come to you the visitors of God and the pilgrims of His House. They are God's guests, and the guest most deserving of honour is His guest. So collect for them what you can use to prepare food for them during these days in which they must stay here. For by God, if my wealth were sufficient for that, I would not ask it of you." Then they would each contribute from their wealth, every man according to what he had, and with it he would prepare food for the pilgrims until they departed from there. [Something of Hāshim's deeds] It is claimed that Hāshim was the first to institute the two journeys for Quraysh: the winter and summer journeys, and the first to feed tharīd in Makkah. His name was ʿAmr, and he was only called Hāshim because he crumbled (hashama) bread in Makkah for his people. A poet of Quraysh, or of some of the Arabs, said: ʿAmr is the one who crumbled tharīd for his people, people in Makkah afflicted with barren years, lean; to him were established the two journeys, both of them, the winter journey and the journey of the summers. Ibn Hishām said: One of the scholars of poetry among the people of the Hijāz recited to me: "people in Makkah afflicted with barren years, lean"
