The arrival of Farwah b. Musayk al-Murādī

Translation

✧ The arrival of Farwah b. Musayk al-Murādī. Ibn Isḥāq said: Farwah b. Musayk al-Murādī came to the Messenger of God ﷺ, separating himself from the kings of Kindah and distancing himself from them, to the Messenger of God ﷺ. [The Day of al-Radm between Murād and Hamdān] Before Islam there had been a battle between Murād and Hamdān, in which Hamdān inflicted upon Murād what they wished, until they routed them on a day called the Day of al-Radm. The one who led Hamdān against Murād on that day was al-Ajdaʿ b. Mālik. Ibn Hishām said: The one who led Hamdān on that day was Mālik b. Ḥarīm al-Hamdānī. [The poetry of Farwah on the Day of al-Radm] Ibn Isḥāq said: On that day Farwah b. Musayk said: We passed by Lufātah while they were emaciated, contending with the reins, inclining toward us. If we prevail, we are prevailing from old; and if we are prevailed upon, we are not ones to be overcome. Our nature is not cowardice, but our fates and the portion of others among us. Thus is time: its turns are by turns, its vicissitudes recur time after time. While we were rejoicing in it and contented, even if its freshness were worn for years, when the turns of time reversed it, and you found those who were envied ground to dust. Whoever among them is envied for the vicissitudes of time will find the vicissitude of the age treacherous to him. If kings were immortal, then we would be immortal; and if the noble endured, then we would endure. That destroyed the chiefs of my people, just as it destroyed the earlier generations. Ibn Hishām said: The first verse of it, and his saying “If we prevail,” is from other than Ibn Isḥāq.
