The Victory of Quṣayy b. Kilāb over the Affair of Makkah, His Consolidation of the Affair of Quraysh, and the Assistance of Quḍāʿah to Him
Translation
✧ The victory of Quṣayy b. Kilāb over the affair of Makkah and his unifying the affair of Quraysh and the assistance of Quḍāʿah to him [The rout of Ṣūfah] Ibn Isḥāq said: When that year came, Ṣūfah did as they had been doing, and the Arabs acknowledged that for them, it being a religion among themselves in the era of Jurhum and Khuzāʿah and their authority. Then Quṣayy b. Kilāb came to them with those with him from his people of Quraysh, Kinānah, and Quḍāʿah at al-ʿAqabah and said: "We are more entitled to this than you." So they fought him, and the people fought a fierce battle. Then Ṣūfah was routed, and Quṣayy overcame them in what had been in their hands of that. [The fighting of Quṣayy against Khuzāʿah and Banū Bakr and the arbitration of Yaʿmur b. ʿAwf] At that point Khuzāʿah and Banū Bakr withdrew from Quṣayy, knowing that he would prevent them as he had prevented Ṣūfah, and that he would come between them and the Kaʿbah and the affair of Makkah. When they withdrew from him, he initiated hostilities against them and resolved on war with them. His brother Rizāḥ b. Rabīʿah stood firm with him with those with him from his people of Quḍāʿah. Khuzāʿah and Banū Bakr went out against him, and they met and fought a fierce battle in al-Abṭaḥ until the slain became numerous in both parties altogether. Then they called one another to peace and to appointing as arbiter between them a man of the Arabs. They appointed Yaʿmur b. ʿAwf b. Kaʿb b. ʿĀmir b. Layth b. Bakr b. ʿAbd Manāh b. Kinānah as arbiter. He judged between them that Quṣayy was more entitled to the Kaʿbah and the affair of Makkah than Khuzāʿah, and that every blood Quṣayy had shed of Khuzāʿah and Banū Bakr was remitted, he trampling it under his two feet, and that what Khuzāʿah and Banū Bakr had inflicted on Quraysh, Kinānah, and Quḍāʿah required the bloodwit to be paid, and that the way be opened between Quṣayy and the Kaʿbah and Makkah. [The reason for naming Yaʿmur "al-Shaddākh"] So Yaʿmur b. ʿAwf was named on that day "al-Shaddākh" because of the blood he trampled and remitted. Ibn Hishām said: It is also said "al-Shudākh."
