Abū Sayyārah and His Ifāḍah with the People

Translation

✧ [Abū Sayyārah and his leading the people in departure] — and these verses are in a qaṣīdah of his — for the ifāḍah from al-Muzdalifah was among ʿAdwān — according to what Ziyād b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Bakkāʾī narrated to me from Muḥammad b. Isḥāq — they inherited that from one great one to another great one, until the last of them upon whom Islam arose was Abū Sayyārah, ʿUmaylah b. al-Aʿzal. About him a poet of the Arabs says: We pushed back from Abū Sayyārah, And from his clients, the Banū Fazārah, Until he let his donkey pass safely, Facing the qiblah, invoking his neighbor. He said: Abū Sayyārah used to lead the people on a she-donkey of his, and for that reason he says: safely, his donkey.
