The Messenger's departure and his appointment of a deputy over Madinah
Translation
✧ [The affair of Abū Khaythamah in the expedition of Tabūk] Ibn Isḥāq said: Then ʿAlī returned to al-Madinah, and the Messenger of God ﷺ continued on his journey. Then Abū Khaythamah returned after the Messenger of God ﷺ had traveled for some days to his family on a hot day. He found two wives of his in two arbors of theirs in his walled garden; each one of them had sprinkled her arbor, cooled water for him in it, and prepared food for him in it. When he entered, he stood at the door of the arbor and looked at his two wives and what they had done for him. He said: 'The Messenger of God ﷺ is in the sun, the wind, and the heat, while Abū Khaythamah is in cool shade, prepared food, and a beautiful wife, staying in his property. This is not just.' Then he said: 'By God, I will not enter the arbor of either of you until I catch up with the Messenger of God ﷺ. So prepare provisions for me.' They did so. Then he brought forward his camel and saddled it, then he went out seeking the Messenger of God ﷺ until he caught up with him when he had encamped at Tabūk. Abū Khaythamah had been overtaken on the road by ʿUmayr b. Wahb al-Jumaḥī, who was seeking the Messenger of God ﷺ, and they traveled together until they drew near Tabūk. Abū Khaythamah said to ʿUmayr b. Wahb: 'I have a sin, so it is no trouble for you to stay behind from me until I come to the Messenger of God ﷺ.' He did so. When he drew near the Messenger of God ﷺ while he was encamped at Tabūk, the people said: 'This is a rider on the road coming.' The Messenger of God ﷺ said: 'Be Abū Khaythamah.' They said: 'O Messenger of God, by God, it is Abū Khaythamah.' When he made his camel kneel, he came forward and greeted the Messenger of God ﷺ. The Messenger of God ﷺ said to him: 'Woe to you, O Abū Khaythamah.' Then he told the Messenger of God ﷺ the news. The Messenger of God ﷺ said to him good words and prayed for good for him. Ibn Hishām said: Abū Khaythamah uttered poetry about that; his name was Mālik b. Qays: When I saw the people in religion acted as hypocrites, I came to that which was most virtuous and most noble. And I pledged allegiance with my right hand to Muḥammad, and did not earn sin nor approach what is forbidden. I left behind a dyed one in the arbor and a herd of chosen, noble she-camels, whose unripe dates had turned dark. And when the hypocrite doubted, my soul was compliant to the religion, half of it, wherever it aimed.
