Translation

✧ [The poetry of Ibn ʿAwf in apologizing for his flight] Ibn Isḥāq said: Mālik b. ʿAwf said, apologizing on that day for his flight: Sleep was prevented, so I do not close my eyes for an hour, by camels at the bends of the road, one with a slit ear. Ask Hawāzin: did I harm their enemy, and aid their debtor when he incurred debt? And many a squadron I clad with a squadron, two bands from it, one unarmored and one armored; And many a vanguard whose narrowness wearied souls, I advanced it, and the witnesses of my people know best. I went down into it and left brothers to it who came to its overflowing depth, and its depth was blood. When its overwhelming depths cleared, it bequeathed to me the glory of life and the glory of spoils to be divided. You have charged me with the sin of the family of Muḥammad ﷺ, and God knows best who is more disobedient and more unjust. And you abandoned me when I fought alone, and you abandoned me when Khathʿam fought. When I build glory, some of you demolish it; a builder and another who demolishes are not equal. And a lean, winter-famished steed, swift, growing in glory toward the heights, generous; I forced into it a Yemeni spear-blade, black, preceded by a long spearhead. And I left his wailing woman turning back his guardian, saying: there is no coming to so-and-so. And I set myself against the spears, fully armored, like the target of the trained camel, to be made lawful and slit.
