Naming those who were martyred on the day of Hunayn
Translation
✧ ʿAbbās b. Mirdās also said regarding the day of Ḥunayn: The remaining bond of Umm Muʾammal is severed with a consequence, and she has exchanged it for an intention that is false. She had sworn by Allah that she would not cut the ties, but she was not truthful in it, nor did she keep the oath. A Khufāfiyyah woman whose summer abode is the interior of al-ʿAqīq, and she camps among the Bedouins at Wajrah, then al-ʿUrfā. If Umm Muʾammal follows the unbelievers, then she has provisioned my heart, despite her distance, with passionate love. The well-informed one will soon tell her that we refused and sought no ally other than our Lord, and that we are with the guide, the Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ, and among us—though a group did not complete it—there are a thousand. With true youths of Sulaym, mighty ones, who obeyed, so they do not disobey any letter of his command. Khufāf, Dhakwān, and ʿAwf—you would reckon them stallions that pranced among their riding camels, dark-hued. It is as if the grey and white woven cloth is a garment for lions that met in their ambush spots, with drooping ears. Through us the religion of Allah became mighty, without any false claim, and we added to the tribe that was with him double. At Makkah when we came, it was as if our banner were an eagle that, after soaring, desired to snatch. Upon the persons of the eyes—you would think between them, when it wheeled in its circuits, the twanging of a bow. On the morning we trampled the polytheists, and we did not find for the command of the Messenger of Allah any equal or any turning aside, in a battle-arena where the people in its midst hear from us no murmur except mutual encouragement and the striking of heads. With white swords we make the skulls fly from their resting places, and we pluck the necks of the champions with them, plucking. How many we left of a slain man lying in his blood, and a widow calling upon her husband in grief. We intend the good pleasure of Allah, not the pleasure of people do we seek, and to Allah belongs what appears altogether and what is hidden.
