Translation
✧ [Ḥassān’s poetry on the conquest of Makkah] One of the poems recited on the day of the conquest was that of Ḥassān b. Thābit al-Anṣārī: Effaced is Dhāt al-Aṣābiʿ, then al-Jiwāʾ; unto ʿAdhrāʾ, its dwelling is empty. Abodes of Banū al-Ḥasḥās, desolate, effaced by the winds and the sky. Therein ceaselessly was a companionable one; amid its meadows were cattle and sheep. Leave this aside; but who is there for a gentle one that keeps me sleepless when the evening has departed? For a disheveled one who has enslaved him, and for his heart there is from her no cure. It is as though a hidden thing from the house of Raʾs whose mixture is honey and water. When the drinks are mentioned one day, then they are a ransom for the excellent wine. Grant her the blame if we have grieved, when there is reviling or reproach. We drink it, and it leaves us kings and lions whom meeting does not restrain. We have lost our horses if you do not see them raising the dust, their tryst is Kadāʾ. They contend for the reins, inclining, upon their shoulders are thirsty spearheads. Our steeds remain stretched out, while the women strike them with their veils. If you turn away from us, we have performed the ʿumrah, and the conquest was; and the covering was removed. Otherwise be patient for the clash of a day in which God aids whom He wills. And Gabriel, the Messenger of God, is among us, and the Holy Spirit, who has no equal. And God said: I have sent a servant who speaks the truth, if the trial avails. I have borne witness to him, so arise and affirm him; but you said: we shall not arise and we do not wish. And God said: I have dispatched an army; they are the Anṣār, whose wont is the meeting. For us, every day, from Maʿadd there is insult, or fighting, or satire. We judge with rhymes those who satirize us, and we strike when the bloods mingle. Now then, convey to Abū Sufyān from me a penetrating message, for the concealment has departed: That our swords have left you a slave, and the lords of ʿAbd al-Dār are its slave-women. You satirized Muḥammad, and I answered on his behalf, and with God is the recompense for that. Do you satirize him while you are not his equal? Then the worse of you two is a ransom for the better of you two. You satirized a blessed, righteous, upright one, the trustee of God, whose nature is faithfulness. Is one of you who satirizes the Messenger of God and one who praises and helps him equal? For my father and his father and my honor are a shield for the honor of Muḥammad against you. My tongue is a sharp sword, no flaw in it, and my sea is not muddied by the buckets. Ibn Hishām said: Ḥassān recited it on the day of the conquest. And it is related: “My tongue is a sharp sword, no reproach in it.” And it reached me from al-Zuhrī that he said: When the Messenger of God ﷺ saw the women striking the horses with their veils, he smiled to Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq ؓ.
