The Messenger's grant of safe-conduct to Ṣafwān b. Umayya

Translation

✧ [The Messenger's grant of safety to Ṣafwān b. Umayyah] Ibn Isḥāq said: Muḥammad b. Jaʿfar narrated to me, from ʿUrwah b. al-Zubayr, who said: Ṣafwān b. Umayyah went out, intending Jeddah, to board from there to Yemen. ʿUmayr b. Wahb said: "O Prophet of God, Ṣafwān b. Umayyah is the chief of his people, and he has gone out fleeing from you, to cast himself into the sea. Grant him safety, may God bless you." He said: "He is safe." He said: "O Messenger of God, give me a token by which he will know your grant of safety." So the Messenger of God ﷺ gave him his turban with which he had entered Makkah. ʿUmayr went out with it until he caught up with him, while he was about to board the sea. He said: "O Ṣafwān, may my father and mother be your ransom! I adjure you by God, by God, regarding yourself, that you should not destroy it. Here is a grant of safety from the Messenger of God ﷺ; I have brought it to you." He said: "Woe to you! Get away from me and do not speak to me." He said: "O Ṣafwān, may my father and mother be your ransom! The best of people, the most righteous of people, the most forbearing of people, the most excellent of people, your cousin. His might is your might, his honour is your honour, his dominion is your dominion?" He said: "I fear him for my own life." He said: "He is more forbearing than that, and more generous." So he returned with him until he brought him and stood before the Messenger of God ﷺ. Ṣafwān said: "This man claims that you have granted me safety." He said: "He has spoken the truth." He said: "Then give me the choice in this matter for two months." He said: "You have the choice in it for four months." Ibn Hishām said: A man of Quraysh, one of the people of knowledge, narrated to me that Ṣafwān said to ʿUmayr: "Woe to you! Get away from me and do not speak to me, for you are a liar," because of what he had done to him, and we have mentioned it at the end of the account of the Day of Badr.
