The Messenger's prayer in the House and b. ʿUmar's seeking out the place where he prayed
Translation
✧ [The reason the Messenger called Khirāsh 'al-Qattāl' (the Killer)] Ibn Isḥāq said: Saʿīd b. Abī Sandar al-Aslamī narrated to me, from a man of his people, who said: There was with us a man called Aḥmar Baʾsan, a brave man. When he slept, he snored a loud, unmistakable snoring, so that his place could not be hidden. When he spent the night in his settlement, he slept in a secluded spot. If the settlement was raided at night, they would cry out, 'O Aḥmar!' and he would leap up like a lion, and nothing could stand in his way. Then a raiding party from Hudhayl came, aiming for his settlement. When they drew near the settlement, Ibn al-Athwaʿ al-Hudhalī said, 'Do not rush until I look. If Aḥmar is in the settlement, there is no way against them, for he has a snoring that cannot be hidden.' He said: He listened, and when he heard his snoring, he went to him until he placed the sword on his chest, then leaned upon it until he killed him. Then they raided the settlement, and they cried out, 'O Aḥmar!' but there was no Aḥmar for them. When the year of the conquest came, and it was the day after the conquest, Ibn al-Athwaʿ al-Hudhalī came and entered Makkah to look and ask about the people's affairs, while he was still upon his polytheism. Khuzāʿah saw him and recognized him, so they surrounded him while he was beside a wall of Makkah's walls, saying, 'Are you the killer of Aḥmar?' He said, 'Yes, I am the killer of Aḥmar, so what of it?' Then Khirāsh b. Umayyah came along, wrapped in his sword. He said, 'Make way for the man,' and by God, we thought he only intended to make the people clear away from him. But when we moved aside from him, he attacked him and thrust the sword into his belly. By God, it is as if I can see his entrails pouring from his belly, and his eyes glazing over in his head, while he was saying, 'Have you done it, O company of Khuzāʿah?' until he collapsed and fell. Then the Messenger of God ﷺ said: 'O company of Khuzāʿah, lift your hands from killing, for killing has become excessive, if it avails. You have killed a slain man for whom I shall surely pay the bloodwit.' Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Ḥarmalah al-Aslamī narrated to me, from Saʿīd b. al-Musayyib, who said: When the Messenger of God ﷺ learned what Khirāsh b. Umayyah had done, he said: 'Khirāsh is indeed a killer,' finding fault with him for that.
