Translation

✧ [ʿUmar's appointment of al-Nuʿmān over Maysān, then his removal] With ʿAdī was his son al-Nuʿmān b. ʿAdī. Al-Nuʿmān arrived with those Muslims who arrived from the land of Abyssinia, and he remained until the caliphate of ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb, who appointed him over Maysān in the land of al-Baṣrah. He recited some verses of poetry, which are: Alā hal atā al-ḥasnāʾa anna ḥalīlahā bi-Maysāna yusqā fī zujājin wa-ḥantami Idhā shiʾtu ghannatnī dahāqīnu qaryatin wa-raqqāṣatun tajdhū ʿalā kulli mansimi Fa-in kuntu nadmānī fa-bi-l-akbari sqinī wa-lā tasqinī bi-l-aṣghari l-mutathallami Laʿalla amīra l-muʾminīna yasūʾuhu tanādumunā fī l-jawsaqi l-mutahaddimi When his verses reached ʿUmar, he said: "Yes, by God, that does grieve me. Whoever meets him, let him inform him that I have removed him," and he removed him. When he came to him, he apologized to him, saying: "By God, O Commander of the Faithful, I never did any of what you heard I said. But I was a poet and found some eloquence in speech, so I said what poets say." ʿUmar said to him: "By God, you shall not work for me in any capacity as long as I live, and you have said what you said." [From Banū ʿĀmir] From Banū ʿĀmir b. Luʾayy b. Ghālib b. Fihr: Salīṭ b. ʿAmr b. ʿAbd Shams b. ʿAbd Wadd b. Naṣr b. Mālik b. Ḥisl b. ʿĀmir, who was the messenger of the Messenger of God ﷺ to Hawdhah b. ʿAlī al-Ḥanafī in al-Yamāmah. One man. [From Banū al-Ḥārith] From Banū al-Ḥārith b. Fihr b. Mālik: ʿUthmān b. ʿAbd Ghanm b. Zuhayr b. Abī Shaddād; and Saʿd b. ʿAbd Qays b. Laqīṭ b. ʿĀmir b. Umayyah b. Ẓarb b. al-Ḥārith b. Fihr; and ʿIyāḍ b. Zuhayr b. Abī Shaddād. Three persons. So all who stayed behind from Badr and did not come to the Messenger of God ﷺ in Makkah, and those who came after that, and those whom the Negus did not carry in the two ships, were thirty-four men.
