The Abyssinian emigrants whom ʿAmr b. Umayya brought
Translation
✧ [The number of those whom he carried with ʿAmr b. Umayyah] These, then, are those whom the Najāshī carried with ʿAmr b. Umayyah al-Ḍamrī in the two ships. The total of those who arrived in the two ships to the Messenger of God ﷺ was sixteen men. [The rest of the emigrants to Abyssinia] Among those who emigrated to the land of Abyssinia, and who did not arrive until after Badr, and whom the Najāshī did not carry in the two ships to the Messenger of God ﷺ, and of those who arrived after that, and of those who perished in the land of Abyssinia, from the emigrants to Abyssinia: [From the Banū Umayyah] From the Banū Umayyah b. ʿAbd Shams b. ʿAbd Manāf: ʿUbayd Allāh b. Jaḥsh b. Riʾāb al-Usdī, of the Asad of Khuzaymah, an ally of the Banū Umayyah b. ʿAbd Shams. With him was his wife Umm Ḥabībah bt. Abī Sufyān, and his daughter Ḥabībah bt. ʿUbayd Allāh—by whom Umm Ḥabībah bt. Abī Sufyān had her kunyah—and her name was Ramlah. [The Christianization of Ibn Jaḥsh in Abyssinia and the Messenger's marrying his wife afterward] He went out with the Muslims as an emigrant, but when he arrived in the land of Abyssinia he became a Christian there and abandoned Islam, and he died there as a Christian. After him the Messenger of God ﷺ married his wife, Umm Ḥabībah bt. Abī Sufyān b. Ḥarb. Ibn Isḥāq said: Muḥammad b. Jaʿfar b. al-Zubayr related to me, from ʿUrwah, who said: ʿUbayd Allāh b. Jaḥsh went out with the Muslims as a Muslim, but when he arrived in the land of Abyssinia he became a Christian. He said: He used to pass by the Muslims among the Companions of the Messenger of God ﷺ and say, “We have opened our eyes, while you have only begun to try to open yours.” That is, “We have seen clearly, while you are still seeking sight and have not yet seen.” That is because a puppy, when it wants to open its eyes to see, first blinks before that. So he used that as a parable for them: “We have opened our eyes and seen, while you have not yet opened your eyes to see; you are still seeking that.” Ibn Isḥāq said: And Qays b. ʿAbd Allāh, a man of the Banū Asad b. Khuzaymah—he was the father of Umm Umayyah bt. Qays, who was with Umm Ḥabībah—and his wife Barakah bt. Yasār, a client of Abū Sufyān b. Ḥarb. These two women were the wet-nurses of ʿUbayd Allāh b. Jaḥsh and Umm Ḥabībah bt. Abī Sufyān; they went out with them when they emigrated to the land of Abyssinia. Two men. [From the Banū Asad] From the Banū Asad b. ʿAbd al-ʿUzzā b. Quṣayy: Yazīd b. Zamaʿah b. al-Aswad b. al-Muṭṭalib b. Asad, who was killed on the day of Ḥunayn with the Messenger of God ﷺ as a martyr; and ʿAmr b. Umayyah b. al-Ḥārith b. Asad, who perished in the land of Abyssinia. Two men. [From the Banū ʿAbd al-Dār] From the Banū ʿAbd al-Dār b. Quṣayy: Abū al-Rūm b. ʿUmayr b. Murrah: al-Muṭṭalib b. Azhar b. ʿAbd ʿAwf b. ʿAbd (b.) al-Ḥārith b. Zuhrah. With him was his wife Ramlah bt. Abī ʿAwf b. Ḍubayrah b. Suʿayd b. Saʿd b. Sahm. He perished in the land of Abyssinia, and there she bore him ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Muṭṭalib. It used to be said: He was the first man to inherit from his father in Islam. One man. [From the Banū Taym] From the Banū Taym b. Murrah b. Kaʿb b. Luʾayy: ʿAmr b. ʿUthmān b. ʿAmr b. Kaʿb b. Saʿd b. Taym, who was killed at al-Qādisiyyah with Saʿd b. Abī Waqqāṣ. One man. Yasār; he perished there as a Muslim, and his wife Fukayhah arrived in one of the two ships. And Sufyān b. Maʿmar b.
