Translation

✧ [Poetry of Saʿīd b. al-ʿĀṣ for his son ʿAmr] And concerning ʿAmr b. Saʿīd, his father Saʿīd b. al-ʿĀṣ b. Umayyah, Abū Uḥayḥah, said: Would that I knew about you, O ʿAmr, as one asking, when he grows up and his hands grow strong and he becomes robust— Will you abandon the affair of the people in which there are confusions, you will uncover a rage that was in the breast, suppressed? [Poetry of Abān b. al-ʿĀṣ for his two brothers Khālid and Saʿīd, and Khālid's reply] And concerning ʿAmr and Khālid, their brother Abān b. Saʿīd b. al-ʿĀṣ said, when they became Muslims, and their father Saʿīd b. al-ʿĀṣ had perished at al-Ẓuraybah, on the side of al-Ṭāʾif, having perished at some property of his there: Would that a dead man at al-Ẓuraybah could witness what ʿAmr and Khālid fabricate in religion. They obeyed among us the command of women, and so became helping against us those of our enemies whom we are trying to outwit. Then Khālid b. Saʿīd answered him, saying: My brother—what a brother! I do not revile his honor, nor does he fall short in evil speech. He says, when his affairs become hard upon him: Would that a dead man at al-Ẓuraybah could be raised up. So leave aside a dead man who has gone his way, and turn to the nearer one, who is poorer. And Muʿayqīb b. Abī Fāṭimah, the keeper of ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb over the treasury of the Muslims—he was affiliated with the family of Saʿīd b. al-ʿĀṣ—and Abū Mūsá al-Ashʿarī, ʿAbd Allāh b. Qays, an ally of the family of ʿUtbah b. Rabīʿah b. ʿAbd Shams: four persons. [From Banū Asad] And from Banū Asad b. ʿAbd al-ʿUzzá b. Quṣayy: al-Aswad b. Nawfal b. Khuwaylid. One man. Abī Waqqāṣ, and ʿUtbah b. Masʿūd, an ally of theirs from Hudhayl. Two men. [From Banū Taym] And from Banū Taym b. Murrah b. Kaʿb: al-Ḥārith b. Khālid b. Ṣakhr, and his wife Rayṭah bt. al-Ḥārith b.
