The genealogy of Bāriq
[ نَسَبُ بَارِقٍ ] قَالَ ابْنُ هِشَامٍ: بَارِقٌ: بَنُو عَدِيِّ بْنِ حَارِثَةَ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ عَامِرِ بْنِ حَارِثَةَ بْنِ امْرِئِ الْقَيْسِ بْنِ ثَعْلَبَةَ بْنِ مَازِنِ بْنِ الْأَسْدِ بْنِ الْغَوْثِ، وَهُمْ فِي شَنُوءَةَ. قَالَ الْكُمَيْتُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ:: وَأَزْدُ شَنُوءَةَ انْدَرَءُوا عَلَيْنَا بِجُمٍّ يَحْسِبُونَ لَهَا قُرُونَا فَمَا قُلْنَا لِبَارِقَ قَدْ أَسَأْتُمْ وَمَا قُلْنَا لِبَارِقَ أَعْتِبُونَا قَالَ: وَهَذَانِ الْبَيْتَانِ فِي قَصِيدَةٍ لَهُ. وَإِنَّمَا سُمُّوا بِبَارِقَ: لِأَنَّهُمْ تَبِعُوا الْبَرْقَ
Translation
✧ [The genealogy of Bāriq] Ibn Hishām said: Bāriq are the Banū ʿAdī b. Ḥārithah b. ʿAmr b. ʿĀmir b. Ḥārithah b. Imriʾ al-Qays b. Thaʿlabah b. Māzin b. al-Asd b. al-Ghawth, and they are among Shanūʾah. Al-Kumayt b. Zayd said:: And the Azd of Shanūʾah rushed upon us with a great host, reckoning for it centuries. We did not say to Bāriq, "You have done wrong," nor did we say to Bāriq, "Make amends to us." He said: These two verses are in an ode of his. They were only named Bāriq because they followed the lightning.
