Account of the poetry recited on the day of Uḥud

Translation

✧ [A rajaz poem attributed to ʿAlī on the day of Uḥud] Ibn Isḥāq said: And ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib said—Ibn Hishām said: A man among the Muslims said it on the day of Uḥud, other than ʿAlī, according to what one of the people of knowledge of poetry mentioned to me, and I have not seen any of them attribute it to ʿAlī: O God, indeed al-Ḥārith b. al-Ṣimmah Was faithful and held a covenant with us. He advanced in a vast, arduous desert, Like a dark, gloomy night, Amid abundant swords and spears, Seeking the Messenger of God where he was. Ibn Hishām said: His saying 'like a night' is from other than Ibn Isḥāq.
