Account of the poetry recited on the day of Uḥud

Translation

✧ [Kaʿb's poetry on Uḥud] Ibn Isḥāq said: Kaʿb b. Mālik said: Inform Quraysh, though far away— do you boast against us of what you did not achieve? You boasted of slain men whom the overflowing gifts of the Most Bountiful overtook. They have entered gardens, and they left for you lions that defend the cubs, fighting for their religion, in their midst a Prophet for the truth who did not hold back. Maʿadd assailed him with one-eyed words and arrows of enmity, unceasingly. Ibn Hishām said: Zayd al-Anṣārī recited to me his words "lam talī" and his words "min niʿami al-mufaḍḍal."
