Translation

✧ [The poetry of Ibn Rawāḥah in mourning Ḥamzah] Ibn Isḥāq said: And ʿAbd Allāh b. Rawāḥah said, mourning Ḥamzah b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib: Ibn Hishām said: Abū Zayd al-Anṣārī recited it to me as being by Kaʿb b. Mālik: My eye wept, and it had a right to weep, Yet weeping and wailing avail nothing For the lion of God, on the morning when they said: “Is Ḥamzah that slain man?” The Muslims were all struck by him there, And the Messenger was struck by him. Abā Yaʿlā, for you the pillars were shattered, And you were the glorious, dutiful, maintaining kin ties. Upon you be the peace of your Lord in gardens Whose bliss is mingled and never ceases. O Hashim of the chosen ones, have patience, For all your deeds are good and beautiful. The Messenger of God bears it patiently, noble, Speaking by God’s command when he says: “O who will convey from me to Luʾayy: After today, a turn of fortune will turn. Before today they did not know nor taste Our battles, by which the burning thirst is quenched. You forgot our striking at the well of Badr, On the morning when swift death came to you, On the morning when Abū Jahl lay prostrate, With birds circling over him, hovering, And ʿUtbah and his son fell together, And Shaybah bit by the polished sword, And our leaving Umayyah stiff, With a supple, noble spear in his chest, And the skulls of Banū Rabīʿah—ask about them, For in our swords are notches from them. O Hind, weep and do not weary, For you are the bereft, tearful, child-bereft one. O Hind, do not show gloating Over Ḥamzah, for your might is abased.”
