Translation

✧ [Poetry of Kaʿb in weeping over Ḥamzah and those killed at Uḥud] Ibn Isḥāq said: Kaʿb b. Mālik said, weeping over Ḥamzah b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib and the Muslims who were killed on the day of Uḥud: You sobbed—is there any sob for you?—and whenever you remember, you stick fast. Remembering a people whose tales came to me in the crooked time. Your heart, from remembering them, is throbbing with longing and with ripening grief— and their slain are in the gardens of bliss, noble of entry and of exit— because they endured under the shadow of the banner, the banner of the Messenger, at Dhū al-Aḍwuj, the morning when all the sons of Aws and Khazraj answered with their swords, and the followers of Aḥmad, when they followed the truth, possessor of light and of the clear path. They did not cease striking the champions and pressing on in the dust stirred up, thus until a king called them to a garden whose entry is a luxuriant tree. All of them died free of affliction, upon the religion of God, not distressed, like Ḥamzah when he fulfilled faithfully, with a keen sharp sword, and the slave of Banū Nawfal met him, roaring like a black camel. Then he thrust into him a javelin like a shooting star, blazing in the kindled flame; and Nuʿmān fulfilled his covenant, and Ḥanẓalah the good did not turn aside from the truth until his spirit went to an abode magnificent in adornment. Those are the ones—not any of you who stayed behind—in the fire, in the locked-up bottom.
