Translation

✧ [Ḥassān's reply to Ibn al-Zibaʿrā] Ḥassān b. Thābit al-Anṣārī ؓ answered him, saying: You have gone, O Ibn al-Zibaʿrā, to a battle in which we had the merit, had it been just. You attained something, and we attained something from you; and thus war is sometimes turns of fortune. We place the swords upon your shoulders wherever we wish, drinking again after drinking. We bring out the foul matter from your anuses like the dung of old camels eating the ʿaṣal. When you turn on your heels fleeing in the mountain pass like herds of sheep. When we made a true onslaught, we drove you to the foot of the mountain with squadrons like the edges of the desert; whoever of the people meets them perishes. The pass was too narrow for us when we traversed it, and we filled its breadth and its flank with men whose like you are not; they were aided by Gabriel as a support, so he descended. And we prevailed on the day of Badr through piety, obedience to Allah, and belief in the messengers. And we killed every chief among them, and we killed every mighty, long-bodied lord. And we left in Quraysh a disgrace on the day of Badr and proverbial tales. And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was truly present on the day of Badr, while the fools were the stupid ones. In Quraysh, from hosts they had gathered, like what is gathered in fertile pasture of neglected camels. We are not your like, O son of his mother's vulva; we attend the people when hardship descends. Ibn Hishām said: Abū Zayd al-Anṣārī recited to me: "and proverbial tales" and the verse before it. And his saying: "In Quraysh, from hosts they had gathered," [was transmitted] from other than Ibn Isḥāq.
