Translation
✧ [The poetry of Ḥassān in reply to Hubayrah] Ibn Isḥāq said: Ḥassān b. Thābit answered him, saying: You drove Kinānah in ignorance, out of your folly, to the Messenger, so God’s army is the one disgracing her. You brought her to the pools of death in open daylight; the Fire is her appointed place, and slaughter will meet her. You gathered them, a motley band without noble lineage, leaders of unbelief; their tyrants deluded you. Will you not take warning from God’s cavalry when it slew the people of al-Qalīb and those whom they cast into it? How many a captive we ransomed without price, and cutting the forelock—we were their masters. Ibn Hishām said: Abū Zayd al-Anṣārī recited it to me as being by Kaʿb b. Mālik. Ibn Hishām said: And the verse of Hubayrah b. Abī Wahb in which he says: And a night whose slaughterer warms himself by the paunch, whose caller invites only the rich to the chosen portions, is related from Janūb, sister of ʿAmr Dhū al-Kalb al-Hudhalī, in verses of hers on a day other than Uḥud.
