Sirat Ibn Hisham 102
What the Arabs used to do with the idols
Translation
✧ [ Al-ʿUzzā and its custodians ] Quraysh and Banū Kinānah had al-ʿUzzā at Nakhlah. Its custodians and guardians were Banū Shaybān, of Sulaym, allies of Banū Hāshim. Ibn Hishām said: allies of (Banū) Abī Ṭālib specifically; and Sulaym is Sulaym b. Manṣūr b. ʿIkrimah b. Khaṣafah b. Qays b. ʿAylān. Ibn Isḥāq said: A poet of the Arabs said: Asmāʾ was indeed married to the head of a little cow, one of the dark ones, which a man of Banū Ghanm had offered as a gift. He saw a defect in her eye as he drove her to the slaughter-place of al-ʿUzzā, and so he gave generously in the division. Thus they used to do: when they slaughtered an offering, they divided it among those who attended them. Al-ghabghab means the place of slaughter and the place where blood is poured. Ibn Hishām said: These two verses are by Abū Khirāsh al-Hudhalī, whose name is Khuwaylid b. Murrah, in verses of his. [ The meaning of al-sadanah ] Al-sadanah are those who are in charge of the Kaʿbah. Ruʾbah b. al-ʿAjjāj said: So no, by the Lord of the secure sanctuaries, at the place where offerings are detained and the house of the sanctuary. These two verses are in a rajaz poem of his, and I shall mention its story, if God Almighty wills, in its proper place.
