The idols among the people of Noah
[ إسَافٌ وَنَائِلَةٌ، وَحَدِيثُ عَائِشَةَ عَنْهُمَا ] قَالَ ابْنُ إسْحَاقَ: اتَّخَذُوا إسَافًا وَنَائِلَةً، عَلَى مَوْضِعِ زَمْزَمَ يَنْحَرُونَ عِنْدَهُمَا، وَكَانَ إسَافٌ وَنَائِلَةٌ رَجُلًا وَامْرَأَةً مِنْ جُرْهُمٍ - هُوَ إسَافُ بْنُ بَغْيٍ، وَنَائِلَةُ بِنْتُ دِيكٍ - فَوَقَعَ إسَافٌ عَلَى نَائِلَةٍ فِي الْكَعْبَةِ، فَمَسَخَهُمَا اللَّهُ حَجَرَيْنِ. قَالَ ابْنُ إسْحَاقَ: حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ أَبِي بَكْرِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ حَزْمٍ، عَنْ عَمْرَةَ بِنْتِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ سَعْدِ بْنِ زُرَارَةَ أَنَّهَا قَالَتْ: سَمِعْتُ عَائِشَةَ ؓ تَقُولُ: مَا زِلْنَا نَسْمَعُ أَنَّ إسَافًا وَنَائِلَةً كَانَا رَجُلًا وَامْرَأَةً مِنْ جُرْهُمٍ، أَحْدَثَا فِي الْكَعْبَةِ، فَمَسَخَهُمَا اللَّهُ تَعَالَى حَجَرَيْنِ. وَاَللَّهُ أَعْلَمُ. قَالَ ابْنُ إسْحَاقَ: وَقَالَ أَبُو طَالِبٍ:: وَحَيْثُ يُنِيخُ الْأَشْعَرُونَ رِكَابَهُمْ بِمُفْضَى السُّيُولِ مِنْ إسَافٍ وَنَائِلِ قَالَ ابْنُ هِشَامٍ: وَهَذَا الْبَيْتُ فِي قَصِيدَةٍ لَهُ سَأَذْكُرُهَا فِي مَوْضِعِهَا إنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى
Translation
✧ [Isāf and Nāʾilah, and the ḥadīth of ʿĀʾishah about them] Ibn Isḥāq said: They adopted Isāf and Nāʾilah at the site of Zamzam, slaughtering sacrifices beside them. Isāf and Nāʾilah were a man and a woman of Jurhum — he was Isāf b. Baghy, and she was Nāʾilah bt. Dīk. Isāf had intercourse with Nāʾilah inside the Kaʿbah, so God turned them into two stones. Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Bakr b. Muḥammad b. ʿAmr b. Ḥazm reported to me, from ʿAmrah bt. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Saʿd b. Zurārah, that she said: I heard ʿĀʾishah ؓ say: We kept hearing that Isāf and Nāʾilah were a man and a woman of Jurhum who committed an offense inside the Kaʿbah, so God (exalted is He) turned them into two stones. And God knows best. Ibn Isḥāq said: Abū Ṭālib said: And where the Ashʿarūn make their camels kneel at the outflow of the torrents from Isāf and Nāʾil Ibn Hishām said: This verse is in a qaṣīdah of his that I shall mention in its proper place, if God (exalted is He) wills.
