✧ When death approached Abu Talib, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came and found Abu Jahl and 'Abd Allah b. Abi Umayyah b. al-Mughirah with him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "O uncle, say: There is no god but Allah, and I will testify for you with it before Allah." Abu Jahl and 'Abd Allah b. Abi Umayyah said, "O Abu Talib, will you turn away from the religion of 'Abd al-Muttalib?" The Prophet ﷺ kept presenting it to him and repeating those words to him until Abu Talib said, as the last thing he spoke to them, that he was on the religion of 'Abd al-Muttalib, and he refused to say: There is no god but Allah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I will surely seek forgiveness for you as long as I am not forbidden from doing so." So Allah sent down: {It is not for the Prophet and those who believe to seek forgiveness for the polytheists, even if they were near relatives, after it has become clear to them that they are companions of the Blaze} [9:113]. And concerning Abu Talib was sent down: {Indeed, you do not guide whom you love, but Allah guides whom He wills, and He is most knowing of the guided} [28:56].
