✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out one day, and we went out with him until we reached the graveyard. He ordered us, and we sat down. Then he stepped over the graves until he came to one of them and sat by it. He spoke privately to it for a long time, then he returned weeping. We wept because of his weeping. Then he turned to us, and 'Umar ؓ met him and said, "What made you weep, O Messenger of Allah? You have made us weep and alarmed us." He took 'Umar's hand, then turned to us and said, "Did my weeping alarm you?" We said, "Yes." He said, "The grave you saw me speaking privately to is the grave of Aminah bt. Wahb. I asked my Lord for permission to seek forgiveness for her, but He did not permit me. So it was sent down to me: {It is not for the Prophet and those who believe to seek forgiveness for the polytheists} [9:113]. Then I was seized by the tenderness that a child feels for his parent, and that is what made me weep. Indeed, I had forbidden you from visiting graves, so visit them, for they make one renounce this world and desire the Hereafter."
